Student Advisory Council Formed

To a greater degree than ever before, perhaps, the student body will have the ear of the Florida College administration when school reconvenes in August.

Florida College’s first ever student advisory council was formed this past April. The council was instigated by Advising Office director Dr. Stephen S. Walker, and is comprised of eight highly qualified students.

The members are: Lorenzo Cum (Talmassons, Italy), Angela Dimas-Agudelo (Tampa, Fla.), Christene Hubartt (Indianapolis, Ind.), Ben Metzger (Franklin, Ky.), Julianne Metzger (Franklin, Ky.), Sam Moorer (Temple Terrace, Fla.), Sarah Nowlin (Vestavia Hills, Ala.), and Stephen Rouse (Charlottesville, Va.).

The council’s mission is to advise the college on matters pertaining to quality improvement. Its existence is mandated by the STOA, FC’s quality enhancement plan. STOA stands for Success through Tutoring, Orientation, and Advising—specific areas where the council will have input.

Council members were selected by faculty and administration, based on criteria of academic success, influence, spirituality, and reliability. Out of nearly 30 nominees, the eight eventual members were chosen because they had been nominated by two or more administrators.

The council will be a permanent fixture of Florida College, giving students a voice in the future of the school. “The charter is ongoing,” Dr. Walker said. “It is a standing function that isn’t expected to go away or be disbanded.”

“I’m definitely very excited about the opportunity to serve,” council member Ben Metzger said. “I think it’s a really good thing that the faculty and administration are willing to get more input from the students. The more they can all work together, the better Florida College will be.”
